
Introducing
Virgin Money
During the 2018 Fintech boom, I played a key role in establishing Virgin Money’s product design team from scratch, helping to shape and deliver the initial 0-1 proposition launch.
Our goal
As Lead UX Product Designer, I hired and led a multi-disciplinary team to shape the entire UX across payments, savings, and lending. Partnering with 10x Banking on their cloud-native core platform, our goal was to build a product that Virgin and UK mass-market customers would love.



Approach: Insight to Impact
My philosophy is simple: join the dots from insight to impact, obsessing over the details users feel and the big numbers leaders need to see.
- Deep User Understanding: We didn't just build; we listened. We used deep research and mapped out user journeys to identify friction points and understand user needs.
- Simplification & Delight: The approach focused on breaking down complex actions into manageable, logical tasks. We introduced elements of "surprise and delight" through engaging illustrations and captivating copy to make the experience enjoyable and memorable.
- Rapid Prototyping & Testing: To ensure we got it right, we relied heavily on research-led rapid prototyping and rigorous user testing. This allowed us to iterate quickly and validate our solutions with real users, leading to high task success rates.
- Cloud-based Design System: We implemented an Atomic Design approach for a robust, cloud-based design system that ensured consistency and velocity across the various "squads" working on different parts of the product.








Results
The project had a transformative impact on both the customer experience and the business's bottom line.
- Secured £50m investment following the successful pitch of a three-month propositional design strategy.
- Lead hands-on initiatives defining onboarding, everyday banking flows, and key UX patterns.
- Built and scaled a high-performing UX/UI product design team, through optimised workflows and Jira best practices.
- Created high-stakes prototypes, validated market fit with rigorous desirability testing
- Led app design roll-out post-investment and launched MVP in under 4 months.
- Delivered a first-in-class design system, accelerating development cycles by 35%.
- Championed rapid, research-driven iterations to maximise user engagement and product-market fit.
- Elevated design’s strategic influence across the business, making it a core growth driver.
